Every now and then I have this conversation with...
Student: Ohay are there any job openings at $boringCompanyIWorkAt?
Me: Yeah, but they want someone with 3 years of experience.
Student: That sucks! How is anyone supposed to get job experience if every job requires experience?
Me: Aren't there internships posted like every summer? Why haven't you taken one of those?
Student: Yeah, but the pay is crappy and I make more money at $deadEndCallCenterJob.
Me: Well, why not contribute or start an open source project on Github to prove you can code and build experience from there?
Student: What's Gethub? Is that like Visual Studio?
Me:
Me: Its sort of a social network, but instead of sharing sandwich or cat pictures you share source code.
Student: Oh I don't have time for that.
Me: Yeah, I noticed you're on XBox Live pretty much every time I log on. I guess that would take most of your time.
Student: But dude, the last thing I want to do after work is write code!
Me: Look, if you can't prove ability nor initiative I really can't help you.
Student:
Me: FYI I've been trying to get people to contribute code to Hayst.ac. If you want to gain experience, start a fork and contribute.
Student: But I don't know JavaScript!
Me: You won't know most of the things you'll be asked to do after you graduate. That's why they're all asking for experience.

Reason: Violence, Government Violence, and... →
…it’s worth remembering that the government initiates violence against its own citizens every day in this country, citizens who pose no threat or harm to anyone else. The particular policy that leads to the sort of violence you see in these videos is supported by nearly all of the politicians and pundits decrying anti-government rhetoric on the news channels this morning. (It’s...

Redefining Geeks and Nerds
People have different, inconsistent ways of defining geeks and nerds.  Some people prefer one or the other, but if they have a strong preference, its not both.  I’ve observed that within the group that gets boxed into either of these two categories, there are two distinct influences that make each group different, and that most are really a mix of the two. I’ve established a more...

Hayst.ac Blog: The Small Steps are Over, the Big... →
hayproj: …Google Hot Trends provides a source of real human searches, but extracting and forming search terms from other sources, such as blog posts, requires a certain amount of natural language processing logic and other advanced applications of computer science which haven’t yet crossed paths with too many JavaScript developers.  Hayst.ac’s next leap is to go way beyond the red...
